![]() However, in many applications (including the one that we are developing on my current project), the JavaScript is minified and aggregated before being deployed to the server. In this scenario, JRebel will detect and deploy changes to the file as soon as the file is saved. If you are simply deploying these static resources “as is” to the server, then the path in the rebel.xml file can simply point to the original source files. You must modify the rebel.xml file for the module containing these static resources for JRebel to work properly (see the JRebel documentation for information about how to do this). In addition to supporting hot deployments of Java classes, JRebel also supports reloading static resources such as JavaScript, Velocity templates, and HTML. This file contains the full path to the target/classes/ directory, and must be included in the artifact that is deployed to JBoss (typically something like a JAR or WAR file). This file can either be created by using an IDE plugin to generate this file for modules within your project (JRebel provides a plugin for Eclipse, IntelliJ, and NetBeans) or by using a Maven plugin to automatically generate this file as part of your Maven build. You tell JRebel which directory to monitor for class file changes by creating a rebel.xml configuration file. In order for JRebel to detect changes in the build output directory it must know where this directory is located. If there is a change to any of the class files in this directory, then JRebel will update the classes in the container’s JVM to reflect those changes. In Maven, this is the target/classes/ directory of your Java project. JRebel works by monitoring the directory that contains the class files that are produced as part of a build. In order to enable developers to be more productive, we decided to try using JRebel, a tool created by ZeroTurnaround that allows developers to see the effect of their code changes immediately. It is important to get quick feedback when working in order to maintain flow and productivity, and this wait time clearly violates that principle. This means that after a developer makes a change to the code, they must wait at least this long (in addition to the amount of time that it takes to get to the correct context in the application to test the change that they are going to make) to see whether the changes that they made achieved the desired result. This application server takes about 1.5 minutes to start. This will check if jrebel is in your pom and add it if not.On our current project, we are using a JBoss application server to host the services that the application needs to function. Since this modification is not welcome in the git repositories and it can easily get lost when doing the usual git magic, you can add this script to your build program. When building, this will generate rebel.xml files to each of your jar files, they will be packaged into your jars and will be used to tell the jrebel runtime where to load classes from. download the license and save as ~/.rebelĮither set it as active by default or use -Pjrebel at build time.JRebel can be used for free on open source projects. You can save the time spent on rebuilding and redeploying the whole source. JRebel is a non-free software that modifies the classloading behavior of the JVM and loads the classes from an alternate location. The backend development sometimes needs a little more time than what you have, jrebel may be a solution for this. Laszlo Hornyak Backend with jrebel Running the backend with jrebel

Also see the r-rust organization on Github for more examples R packages, especially the hellorust package. It converts videos to animated GIFs that use thousands of colors per frame. If you are interested in learning more about using Rust in R packages, have a look at my slides from eRum 2018. In this case the R package itself does not contain any Rust code because we can call Rust directly from C. This is the first CRAN package that interfaces a Rust library. Hopefully this will make it easier to generate animations with hundreds or even thousands of frames using for example the gganimate package. Running this example shows that the GIF encoding is no longer a serious overhead: time spent in encoding is only a small fraction of the total time to generate the plot. Gifski shows a progress meter while generating the GIF. Scale_x_log10(limits = range(gapminder$gdpPercap)) + ggtitle(data$year) + theme_classic() Scale_size("population", limits = range(gapminder$pop)) + geom_point() + ylim(20, 90) + P <- ggplot(data, aes(gdpPercap, lifeExp, size = pop, color = continent)) + animation::saveGIF() but much faster: # Example borrowed from gganimateĭatalist <- split(gapminder, gapminder$year) Png_files <- sprintf("frame%03d.png", 1:10)Īlternatively the save_gif() function captures plots R generated in an R expression and saves them as a animated gif, just like e.g. The gifski() function combines a set of PNG images into a single animated GIF file: # Convert png files to gif The ?gifski manual page contains example of both. The R interface is very simple: either generate a GIF from a set of images, or directly from the R graphics device. If you are on MacOS, try installing from source to see how it works: install.packages("gifski", type = "source") Cargo automatically compiles and links all Rust code when building the R package. On Linux you need to install cargo to compile the rust code, but the package does not require any external libraries. One of the major benefits of Rust is that it has no runtime, so the R package has no dependencies. ![]() The R package wraps the Rust crate and can be installed in the usual way from CRAN. The Gifski Website has more technical details and beautiful examples. It can create animated GIF images with thousands of colors per frame and do so much faster than other software. Gifski is a multi-threaded high-quality GIF encoder written in Rust. Gifski is a simple but powerful package which can hopefully take away an important performance bottleneck for generating animated graphics in R. The gifski package which was demonstrated in May at eRum 2018 in Budapest is now on CRAN. ![]() ![]() ![]() Battle the flamboyant Mettaton EX in Rivals of Aether with this accurate. Sometimes an asymmetry is based on asymmetrical exposure to noise. Asymmetrical Hearing LossĪny audiologist knows the classic etiologies that can cause asymmetrical hearing loss. While unified sound is not the only thing you are trying to accomplish when fitting asymmetrical hearing losses, it is it is one of the most important. As you go through the process of fitting hearing aids, you are trying to achieve some sort of unified percept, which is sometimes easier to achieve in some patients compared to others. This becomes more complicated in cases of asymmetrical hearing loss because there is not balanced hearing from both sides. Normally, it should be a relatively seamless experience for the patients so that they have a unified percept. One of the almost unstated assumptions is that we are trying to create a single unified sound for the patient, and it is only when something odd happens that the patient might report that they hear two different sounds from one side of the head versus the other. We also expect this to happen when we fit hearing aids binaurally to a patient with bilateral hearing loss. Although sound comes from two sides, the individual with normal hearing will experience a single unified sound. The brain uses differential information between the ears, such as amplitude, frequency and timing cues of sound sources at the ears to make distinctions between sounds. The crossover and mixing of information happens at a relatively low level in the auditory system. Binaural HearingĪs you know, sound comes in on two sides of the head and travels distinct parallel pathways to the brain. I will provide some background information, but then will move into a discussion on recommendations, strategies and examination of some cases. I am going to talk briefly about binaural hearing. I will use case examples from patients with whom I have been involved either directly or indirectly. Hopefully I can present some viable strategies that are based on published literature as well as lessons that I have learned over the years in dealing with these complex hearing losses. In his most recent Hearing Aids book, Harvey Dillon (2012), spends three or four pages addressing asymmetrical hearing loss. ![]() In preparation for this course, I reviewed a book chapter by the late Bob Sandlin and Rose Giovanni in one of Michael Valente’s (1994) books, to which I will refer in the course of this presentation. ![]() There is a good amount of dated literature on fitting asymmetrical hearing losses, but not so much that I can recall recently. However, when you approach a case of asymmetrical hearing loss, the fitting path is a bit less clear. Many hearing aid fitting techniques that have been developed over the years have been built on the assumption that hearing loss is similar between the two ears. You can get a free hearing test and try the hearing aids in the office for free and we can find a solution that works for your budget.Editor’s Note: This text course is an edited transcript of a live seminar. This varies from the basic to premium level and also changes based on other functionality such as tinnitus maskers, TV remotes, direct streaming from your iPhone and other benefits. For your binaural hearing aids, the price depends on the technology level required to reach the best speech clarity for you. Lansdowne Hearing helps people from West Philadelphia to Delaware County, PA to find hearing aids that fit their budget. Binaural hearing aids allow accurate sound localization and therefore assure your safety. This can include instances when walking inside or outside where traffic exists. When sound localization is low, your safety is compromised when you are in an unfamiliar place. This is helpful for safety and just normal living. ![]() Your brain processes sounds from both ears and identifies exactly the source of those sounds.
The performer nearly refused to play it, but the concert promoter eventually prevailed upon him.įorced to work with an “unplayable piano,” Jarrett wielded all his musical prowess to conjure something singular and singularly popular. The only available piano was (despite the tuner’s best efforts) off key, with several non-functioning notes and pedals. In his book he tells the story of how pianist Keith Jarrett, in 1975, almost skipped the concert that became the best-selling solo jazz album of all time. It’s about embracing “the untidy, unquantified, uncoordinated, improvised, imperfect, incoherent, crude, cluttered, random, ambiguous, vague, difficult, diverse, or even dirty.” It applies equally to our mental and emotional lives, to business and politics, to relationships with our fellow humans. “But often,” he continues, “we are so seduced by the blandishments of tidiness that we fail to appreciate the virtues of messiness.”Īnd messiness, in Harford’s understanding, does not refer solely to the physical realm. The instinct to structure the world in accordance with neat categories is strong, and wouldn’t be an instinct if it served no purpose. “Sometimes, of course, our desire for tidiness … can be helpful,” he writes. The British economist Tim Harford, in Messy: The Power of Disorder to Transform Our Lives, reaches a similar conclusion. Both tidy and messy, the researchers write, “might be functional, particularly insofar as they could activate different psychological states and benefit different kinds of outcomes.” It too has a place, and maybe one as important as its opposite. The point is simply that disorder isn’t an unconditional evil. That’s not to say we should all arrange our lives with the intentionality of a tornado. Disorder, apparently, helps us to do just that by steering us clear of tradition. To think original thoughts and create original works, you must venture where no one has before. The idea is that creativity, almost by definition, requires a break with convention. They asked participants to think of new uses for ping pong balls and, as predicted, the messy room inspired more inventive solutions. Under the right circumstances it might instill traits we consider desirable, namely creativity. Will a great enough mess turn the best of us into scoundrels? Must we straighten up or risk depravity? Rather than dismiss disorder, Vohs and her colleagues followed that experiment with another, which hints that an unorganized life might have some redeeming qualities. Our surroundings, it seems, can influence whether we make the choices society deems proper. On the way out, when offered an apple or a chocolate bar, they were also more likely to take the healthy snack. In one experiment, they asked participants for charitable donations those in the tidy room gave more than twice those in the messy room. Broadly speaking, they guessed that people in uncluttered settings would follow social convention, while those in cluttered settings would break with it. The research cited most commonly on this subject dates to 2013, when a trio of marketing professors - Vohs among them - explored the effects of order and disorder on human behavior. The question is, did it help? Disorder Moulds the Mind Clearly their messiness didn’t hinder them. He wasn’t the only unkempt colossus, either - Mark Twain and Steve Jobs also toiled at tumultuous desks. The confusion of Einstein’s office did not prevent him discovering previously unimagined secrets of the universe. Yet from this muddle arose perhaps the greatest intellectual, not to mention creative, feats of the 20th century. ![]() Photos of his study, taken after his death in 1955, reveal a scene of scattered papers, heaped books and displaced odds and ends. With a quick wit you might counter: “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” That quip is often misattributed to Albert Einstein, whose own clutter was indeed commensurate with his towering genius. Suppose an overbearing manager scolds you for your slovenly workspace. Cleanliness, as the proverb says, is next to godliness.” Another school of thought, however, preaches the value of disarray. “Historically, the evidence has favored the tidy camp. ![]() ![]() “Messy or tidy - which is better?” writes University of Minnesota researcher Kathleen D.
